The single biggest reason for a return or exchange in kidswear isn't the product — it's the size. Kids grow unevenly, brands size differently, and a chart full of numbers doesn't help if you don't know where to hold the tape. Here's a five-minute method that works for any age, from newborn to 16 years.
What you actually need to measure
For most tops, sets, and dresses, three numbers matter: chest (around the fullest part, under the arms), waist (at the natural waistline, not where the pants sit), and length (from shoulder to hem for a fair comparison). For bottoms, add hip and inseam. Skip shoulder-to-wrist unless you're buying full-sleeve shirts or jackets — it rarely changes the size call.
How to measure without a fight
Measuring a toddler standing still is optimistic. It's easier to lay a well-fitting existing garment flat and measure that instead — chest seam to seam, doubled, gives you the same number as measuring the child, with none of the wriggling. For infants under 12 months, this flat-garment method is almost always more accurate than trying to wrap a tape around a moving baby.
When in doubt, size up
Kids' clothes see heavy wash cycles and fast growth spurts. If a measurement falls exactly between two sizes, sizing up gives a few extra months of wear rather than a few extra weeks. This matters most for Winter wear and jackets, which typically get layered over other clothes.
Age labels are a starting point, not a guarantee
Our age-based labels (6–24M, 2–5Y, 6–16Y) are a helpful starting range, but two children of the same age can differ by a full size. If your child has run large or small for their age in other brands, use that as your anchor rather than the birthday.
Category-specific notes
Rompers, dungarees, and bodysuits for infants (browse them in Infants) size mainly off chest and length, not waist — babies don't really have a waistline yet. For sets and co-ordinated sets, check both the top and bottom measurements separately since growth isn't always proportional top-to-bottom.
